WATER LEAKS FAQ
Why is My Bill So High?
Even small household leaks can result in a significantly higher water bill if left unrepaired. Identifying and repairing leaks promptly can help prevent excessive water usage and unexpected charges.
Common Examples of Water Loss
Running Toilets
A running toilet may not always be audible, but it can waste a substantial amount of water. Depending on the severity of the leak, a running toilet can lose approximately 1,440 to 8,000 gallons of water per day. Over a 30-day period, this could result in water losses exceeding 250,000 gallons.
Running Garden Hoses or Outdoor Water Leaks
A continuously running garden hose or similar outdoor leak can waste approximately 17,000 gallons of water per day. Over the course of a month, this could result in more than 500,000 gallons of water usage.
Leak Detection Tips
IF you suspect a leak, the following methods may help identify the source:
1. Toilet Leak Test
Add a few drops of food coloring or dye to the toilet tank. Wait 2 to 4 hours without flushing the toilet. If the color appears in the bowl, the toilet is leaking and repairs should be made as soon as possible.
2. Determine Whether the Leak Is Inside or Outside the Home
If your property has a main shut-off valve where the water line enters the home, you may contact Preston County PSD #4 to schedule an appointment with a technician. Our staff may be able to assist in determining whether a leak is located inside the home or on the service line.
